St. Michael's Church
Residenzplatz, dates from about 800 and is Salzburg's oldest parish church. Renovated in 1767-76.

Since 1120. Newly erected from 1600 to 1619. Prince Archbishop F.A. Harrach had the State Rooms decorated and furnished under the supervision of Lukas von Hildebrandt (1709-1727). Murals and ceiling frescoes by J.M. Rottmayr and Martino Altomonte.

3 - Cathedral (Cathedral Museum and Carolino Augusteum-Cathedral Excavations)
The Cathedral, the most impressive early Baroque edifice north of the Alps. Originally built in 774 by St. Virgil; 1181-1200 construction of the late Romanesque cathedral; torn down after damage by fire in 1598. 1614 rebuilt under Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus according to plans by Santino Solari; consecrated in 1628 by Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron.

4 - Hohensalzburg Fortress (Carolino Augsteum-Fortress Museum, Rainer Museum, World of Marionettes)

Accessible on foot or by funicular railway (station in the Festungsgasse). The largest fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. Built in 1077, greatly extended under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach around 1500, completed under Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf Kuenberg in 1681. Late Gothic secular rooms.

5 - St. Peter's Abbey, Cemetry and Catacombs
St. Peter Bezirk. Abbey and Benedictine Monastery, founded by St. Rupert about 700, the latter with romanesque and gothic cloisters. The church is high romanesque convertedto late-baroque. St. Peter's cemetery, the final resting place of prominent personalities, e.g. Nannerl Mozart.

Catacombs
St. Peter Bezirk, phone 84 45 78-0, fax 84 45 76-80. The catacombs hewn out of the rocks of the rocks of the Mönchsberg are of early Christian origin.
 
6 - Franciscan Church
Franziskanergasse. The most interesting church in Salzburg from an architectural point of view. Founded during the 8th century, destroyed by fire in 1167, Romanesque nave built in 1223, late Gothic hall choir 1408/1460, Renaissance decorations and furnishings, Baroque chancel, Baroque high altar designed by Fischer von Erlach (1709) with Gothic Madonna by Michael Pacher (c. 1495).
 
7 - Collegiate Church
University Square. Largest and most beautiful church built by Fischer von Erlach (1696-1707) as the university church. Altar paintings by J.M. Rottmayr. Unique convex façade rising to a sweeping diadem of towers.
 
8 - Festival Halls
Hofstallgasse, phone 84 90 97, fax 01/526 41 86. e-mail: museumscollection@vienna.at. Former royal stables (1607). Enlarged and reconstructed as the Small Festival Hall1924 /1926 and in 1937. Redesigned in 1962/63. Large Festival Hall built to designs by Clemens Holzmeister from 1956 to 1960. Portal designed by Fischer von Erlach. Felsenreitschule (Riding School) was built after plans by Fischer von Erlach in 1693.
Siegmundstor (Siegmund's Gate)
Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz, road tunnel through the Mönchsberg, approx. 123m in length, leading to the Riedenburg district. Completed in 1767 under Prince Archbishop Sigismund von Schrattenbach after a construction period of only 16 months (manual labor).

10 - Getreidegasse
Countless elaborately ornamented signs, artistic portals and romantic arcaded courtyards provide the perfect backdrop for the hustle and bustle of this busy shopping lane.
 
11 - Mozart's Birthplace
Getreidegasse 9, phone 84 43 13, fax 84 06 93. A typical Salzburg burgher house. Mozart was born here ion Jan. 27, 1756. Houses the apartment once occupied by the Mozart family and contains objects from Mozart's life and works (childhood violin, concert violin, viola, "Hammerklavier" - copy, clavichord). Exhibitions.
 
12 - St. Sebastian's Church, Tomb of Paracelsus, Cemetery
Linzergasse 41. Late Gothic church erected from 1505 to 1512. Enlarged and reconstructed in 1749. Rococo portal by F.A. Danreiter. Paracelsus tomb.

St. Sebastian's Cemetery
Built under Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich (1595-1600) in the style of an Italian campo santo. Contains the graves of the Mozart and Weber families, among others. Gabriel Chapel, Wolf Dietrich Mausoleum.

Linzer Gasse
Historical street on the right bank of river Salzach at the foot of Capucin Mountain with old burgher houss, beautifully restored shops and a fine pathway on Capucin Mountain, lined with the Stations of the Cross. Breathtaking view over the city from the mountain.
 
13 - Holy Trinity Church
Dreifaltigkeitsgasse. First church designed by Fischer von Erlach in Salzburg (1694-1702). Concave façade with sculpted figures by M.B. Mandl, dome fresco by J.M. Rottmayr.
 
14 - Mozart's Residence
Makartplatz 8, phone 88 34 54 -40, fax 87 29 24. Where W.A. Mozart lived from 1773 - 1780. The rooms formerly occupied by the Mozart family on the first floor were turned into a museum documenting the history of the building and the life of the Mozart family in this house.

Mozart Sound and Film Museum
in Mozart's Residence, Makartplatz 8, tel. 88 34 54, fax 87 29 24. Archive Contains material relating to the interpretation of Mozart's works, documentary and feature films.

Christian Doppler Memorial and Research Centre
Makartplatz 1, tel. and fax 88 76 31. Birthplace of the world-famous physicist (1803-1853).
 
15 - Mirabell Palace, Mirabell Gardens
Mirabellplatz. Originally called "Altenau", Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich had the palace built in 1606 for Salome Alt. Reconstructed by Lukas von Hildebrandt 1721-1727, rebuilt after the disastrous town fire in 1818. Monumental staircase with figures by G.R. Donner. Marble Hall, used today for wedding ceremonies and concerts. Seat of the mayor of Salzburg.

The Mirabell Gardens
with groups of statues depicting figures from Greek mythology, marble vases designed by Fischer von Erlach. Natural Theatre, Bastionsgarten, "Dwarf Garden".
 
16 - Hellbrunn Palace

Manneristic, early Baroque pleasure palace built by Santino Solari (1612-1615) under Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus. Festival hall and Octagon with wall and ceiling frescoes by Arsenio Mascagnis; extensive Baroque gardens with the famous trick fountains, the mechanical theater (1750) and the "stone theater" (first opera performed in the German-speaking world in 1617).

Hellbrunn Zoo
phone 82 01 76, fax 82 01 76-6. There are over 400 animals at Hellbrunn Zoo. As a geo-zoo Hellbrunn is laid out according to the geographical regions from which the animals come. Animals from a particular continent therefore live in the same area of the zoo.
 
17 - St. Erhardkirche
Nonntaler Hauptstrasse 12. Built by Gaspare Zuccalli (1685-1689). High altar painting by Johann Michael Rottmayr and stucco by Francesco Brenno.
 
18 - Nonnberg Convent
Nonnberggasse 2. Oldest continuously inhabited nunnery in the German-speaking world (Benedictine nuns). Founded by St. Rupert around 700. Late Gothic basilica with crypt, Romanesque frescoes (c. 1150). St. John's Chapel with altar in the style of Veit Stoss (1498). 19 - Stieglkeller
At the foot of the Hohensalzburg Fortress; impressive banquet hall, manorial hunting rooms, one of the most beautiful beer gardens in Salzburg with a wonderful view over the Old City. 20 - Cajetan Church
Kajetanerplatz 1. Built by Gaspare Zuccalli (1685-1700). Dome fresco, high altar and right side altar by Paul Troger, left side altar by J.M. Rottmayr. 21 - Horse Pond (Kapitelschwemme)
Kapitelplatz. Built in 1732 under Prince Archbishop Leopold Anton Firmian. The sculptures are by J.A. Pfaffinger. 22 - Johann-Michael-Haydn Memorial

23 - New Building of the Residenz and Carillon
Residenz Square. Originally built as a royal residence (1592-1602), it now houses the offices of the provincial government. Magnificent stucco ceilings by Elia Castello (1602). Tower with Glockenspiel (carillon), added by Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf Thun (1702). The 35 bells were made in Antwerps. Kranzlmarkt 1. Built in 1407. Reconstructed 1616-1618. Marble portal with a statue of the Goddess of Justice by Hans Waldburger (1616). Lunar clock. Present appearance since 1772.

27 - Horse Pond
Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz. Built in 1695, presumably after plans by Fischer von Erlach. The rear façade was erected to hide a former quarry. Horse tamer by M.B. Mandl.

31 - Museum of Natural History

34 - Augustiner Bräu (Mülln Brewery)

Augustinergasse 4. Beer has been brewed by the Augustine monks since 1621. The beer is tapped from wooden barrels and served in stone mugs. Attractive, traditional halls, large beer garden.

Imbergstiege 3. Originally Romanesque, extended and redecorated in the Baroque style in 1681, ceiling paintings 1772, altars and other decoration 1775 - 1778.

41 - Capuchin Church and Convent
Kapuzinerberg 6. Built 1599-1602. The Gothic church door dating from 1450 is a relic of the old Cathedral.
